Angola: Regime Radicalizes as Rejection of Lourenço Grows

The so-called radicalization of the regime is seen as “counterproductive” not only because it contradicts an ongoing evolution of society in the direction of greater civic and political openness, but because it is considered to be a reflection of “understandings” attributed to JL and figures in his circle, including FM, according to which the fulfilment of the purpose of the “third term” may, under certain circumstances, be facilitated by creating a climate of political and other tensions.

The security apparatus, based on three arms - SINSE, SIE and SISM, all in expansion - is receiving budgetary appropriations whose magnitude is considered to already exceed those of the Police.
