Angola: MPLA, João Lourenço’s “Weak Point”

JOÃO LOURENÇO (JL) is committed to strengthening his power and influences on the MPLA structures, but he has not been successful so far. The “weak point” that the MPLA de facto represents for JL is also seen as “a remnant” of the two-headed power model that his predecessor, JOSÉ EDUARDO DOS SANTOS (JES), tried to implement after his withdrawal. The cadres of his strict confidence with which JES filled the party's governing bodies, in general, still remain. The likelihood, internally considered “very strong”, that in MAR.2021 the MPLA women's organization, OMA, will elect a new leader other than the one whose candidacy JL personally promoted and would correspond to his interest, will only be the corollary of the setback of the whole process.
