Mozambique: Defense Spending Soars

The exponential increase in Defense and Security expenditures are decisive for the government's need to rectify the State Budget (OE) for 2020. Especially due to the conflict in Cabo Delgado, public expenditure in Defense and Security increased more than 4 times in value in the last 2 years and the Defense sector budget approved for this year is almost exhausted. The increase in expenditure contrasts with the fall in investment expenses by more than 30%, representing just over 20% of public spending, in spite of the economic needs in times of crisis in a model where the State has the role of driving incentive to private investment. A particular source of concern in FADM media is the possibility of attacks against the region of Palma, where the construction works of the infrastructures of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) projects are ongoing.
