Mozambique: Government Review of Cabo Delgado Far from Reality

In the balance of governance in 2021, the fight against terrorism was presented by the FRELIMO government as one of the great "triumphs", giving the situation in Cabo Delgado as controlled and devaluing the spread of jihadist cells through the provinces of Niassa and Zambézia, classified as " sporadic outbreaks".

"Cleaning up" operations continue in Cabo Delgado by the Rwandan and SAMIM contingents. Ambushes by small armed cells against patrols of the Armed Forces for the Defense of Mozambique (FADM) and SAMIM persist in various points of the province (AM 1328).

The persistence of active insurgent pockets led Maputo to request the reinforcement of the SAMIM contingent. The South African government acquiesced, with the arrival in Cabo Delgado of two infantry battalions of the South African National Defense Force (SANDF), previously trained for operational conditions in Cabo Delgado.
