Angola: New Circumstances and Same Goals in Politics For Cabinda

Among the separatist leaders of Cabinda, the idea prevails that the policy of the regime of JOÃO LOURENÇO (JL) towards Cabinda did not deviate from the rigidity revealed by his predecessor, JOSÉ EDUARDO dos SANTOS (JES), which in the perspective consisted of fighting separatism militarily, with a view to its weakening and subjugation, combining such an effort with enticing or repressing foci of civic and political protest in society.

The new coordinator of the MPLA for Cabinda, PEDRO MORAIS NETO (PMN), disappointed local civil society circles with whom he met on his first visit to the territory, due to what they understood was the “narrowness” of the statements he made at the time about the solution of the situation in the province, considered contrasting with the “realism” of his predecessor, FONTES PEREIRA (FP).
