Mozambique: Nyusi's Plans Disputed by Opposition and FRELIMO Groups

A revision of the Constitution could open doors for a new mandate by FILIPE NYUSI (FN) beyond 2024, through the method of PR election by list system, where the FRELIMO candidate will be head of the party list. This change still entails a formal revision of the Constitution by a 2/3 majority, possible with FRELIMO votes from JUN onwards.

The strategy of the dominant wing in FRELIMO does not gather support from the wings assigned to the former PR JOAQUIM CHISSANO (JC) and ARMANDO GUEBUZA, from which the next FRELIMO candidate could emerge. The positions of internal groups are considered more relevant than those of the opposition in view of the parliamentary imbalance between FRELIMO and RENAMO and MDM, and the control of the state and a large part of the economy by FRELIMO members and sympathizers.
