Mozambique: Momade Makes Internal Compromises in DDR to Avoid RENAMO Split

The National Political Commission of RENAMO, meeting on 18.APR. (AM Flash 111), came out in defense of the party president, OSSUFO MOMADE (OM), contested internally. Main positions taken:
- Accusing some of the main former leaders of the party, even some inactive, as being at the origin of the internal opposition by a group of officers of the so-called “military wing”;
- Call for mobilization of militants for various demonstrations in support of OM.

The process of Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (DDR), when all that remains is to dismantle the base of Mpanda-Panda, in Gorongosa (Sofala), remains a focus of internal divergence in the party, given the opposition of the military leaders, confronted with the lack of definition of the attribution of pensions and subsidies agreed upon for the demobilization of former guerrillas (AM Flash 111). The DDR, which implies the passage of RENAMO's military to the reserve or their integration into the Defense and Security Forces, has been one of the main arguments of the opposition to OM, due to the delays in the compensations to be payed by the government - subsidies and pensions.
