Sao Tome and Principe: Alarm Over Impact of Price Rises

As of JUN, the entry into force of the collection of VAT (15%) and other accessory taxes, such as the special consumption tax, contained in the Budget project for 2022, will contribute to the worsening of the cost of living, mobilizing additional State revenues USD 7 million. The government will also implement mandatory car insurance (minimum EUR 118) and enforce vehicle tax collection.

The application of VAT should imply an immediate increase in the fuel prices, which could rise by 15%. As the needs of the population are already high - more than 55% have just one meal a day - thousands of young people have left the country, especially for Portugal, in search of a job.

For the first time in the last 20 years, the defense and security sector is the fourth most favored in the OGE, after health, education and infrastructure.
