Mozambique: Financial Engineering at ENH Allows Artificially Lowering Foreign Debt

Although the actual numbers of the external public debt do not point to improvements and the judicial process regarding the “hidden debts” case, which involved illegal credits and commissions to intermediaries linked to the government and the FRELIMO party of more than c. USD 2,200 million, the government of FILIPE NYUSI is externally promoting the need for a forceful return of donors, including Portugal, who suspended direct support to the budget, in line with what was decided by the International Monetary Fund.

AMILCAR TIVANE, Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance, recently defended the mobilization of the “club” of donors to support the government. The goal is to reach amounts of direct support (donations) of between USD 750 million and USD 800 million, presented by the government as a condition for the continuation of infrastructure and social development projects in the country.
