Angola: Lourenço Reinforces Control of Justice With Joel Leonardo
PR JOÃO LOURENÇO (JL) has been strengthening control over the country's judiciary (Supreme Court - TS, Constitutional Court - TC, and Court of Auditors - TdC), in a format of greater exposure, imposing candidates of his convenience in the curricular competitions for choosing judges and members of the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSMJ). In influential circles of Angolan politics and society, JL's behaviour is even compared negatively with that of his predecessor JOSÉ EDUARDO dos SANTOS (JES), who also exerted influence over the high judiciary, but sought to promote some autonomy in the functioning of the courts, without interfering in administrative matters.
