Mozambique: Nyusi Gains Time to Control FRELIMO Succession

The strategy of managing the calendar of the election of the next president of FRELIMO and presidential candidate forced by the group of FILIPE NYUSI (FN) prevailed in the Central Committee (CC) of the party held in Matola on 05-06.APR (AM Special Report 78). In this context, the party's candidate in the elections of 09.OCT. and likely next PR will only be known in MAY, on the occasion of the next meeting of the CC and following a short-list of pre-candidates to be presented by the Party's Political Commission (CP), which should meet during the month of APR. During two days of CC, FN argued that the current circumstances in the country, namely the situation in Cabo Delgado, advise the party to follow a less “strenuous” schedule than that of previous successions, where more advance was used for the selection.
